Overview

The City of Westminster is an Inner London Borough which also holds city status. Private rent for low earners and income inequality are both very high here – with only Kensington & Chelsea performing worse on both of these indicators. The net gain of only 116 social/affordable homes in Westminster over a three year period is also well below the London average.

Only 14% of employees resident in Westminster are low paid, which is below the London average of 22%. Only 12% of jobs based in Westminster are low paid but because Westminster alone accounts for 14% of all jobs in London, it is the borough with the largest number of jobs, at 570,000, with 69,000 of them being low paid.

The rankings below show how Westminster is performing on key poverty and inequality indicators, in comparison with all 32 London boroughs. The first section gives a snapshot from the latest data: the deeper the red, the worse the problem; those coloured green are in the top half of London boroughs, which are performing better.

The circles show whether the issue is getting better or worse in comparison to previous period. Where there is no change, the circle is orange. Where there is no comparative data, the circle is grey.
