Overview

Hackney is an Inner London borough with significant problems of poverty and inequality. The poverty rate is 36% in Hackney, well above the London average of 27%, and only lower than Newham and Tower Hamlets. 5.4% of working age people are unemployed – down from 6.7% in 2011-2013. 

Hackney has the highest infant mortality rate of any borough by a large margin. 5.4 babies die per 1,000 live births in Hackney. The next highest rate is 4.5 per 1,000 live births in Barking & Dagenham. 

However, Hackney has good educational outcomes including for disadvantaged pupils. It also has a relatively high proportion of new homes which are affordable, social housing or shared ownership.
